Thursday’s Prayer: How majestic!!

Psalm 8:9 – Lord, our Lord, how majestic is your name in all the earth.

With the rise of the internet and especially internet on our phones we can compare products quickly with the press of a button.  See a product that seems to be at a good price.  Google it quickly and you can find out who else sells it and what they’re selling it for.  You can probably even use it as leverage to negotiate a lower price.  Find a product and want to know how well it works.  Search the web on the spot for some reviews.  We do the same thing with establishments that we might visit or even join.  If I am interested in a church, I can check them out online and see what they’re like without even walking through the front doors.  I can check their Facebook profile or Google profile and see what kind of reviews people are writing about them.

We have gotten very good at comparing products.

In Psalm 8 David has been setting God far above and far apart from all other gods.  Simply stated – there is no other god like him.  I suppose we could say there is a creation story for each major world religion.  It may vary in the details, but the general story remains the same.  Most world religions depict their god as the greatest and the strongest, the biggest and the baddest (that’s a good thing).

But all the other gods differ from the God of the Bible in this one area, the most crucial.  All the other gods tell their followers, “Keep these five pillars, follow these noble truths, and you can live with me in paradise.”  All the other gods tell their followers, “Here are the things you need to do to climb up into heaven to be with me.”

Only the God of the Bible - the Triune God, the Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit – tells us, “I know that it is impossible for you to make your way up into heaven to be with me, so I will come down from heaven.  I will take on your flesh.  I will become a little lower than the angels and I will die for you.  And by my death I will elevate you to be sons and daughters of God.”  Only the God of the Bible says that he will die for us.  Only the God of the Bible says that give up his most precious treasure – his own Son – to make us his most precious children.  Yes, there is no one like him.

Lord! Lord! How majestic is your name in all the earth!

PRAYER

Lord God, I stand in awe of you.  You are majestic in your creating glory.  You are majestic in your caring glory – you pay attention to me, just a human being among so many.  You are majestic in your condescension.  You don’t ask me to climb up to you; you came down to me and you died the death I deserved so I could live with you forever.  Lord, you truly are great! There is no one like you.  I stand in awe of you.  Amen.
