Wednesday's Prayer: Standing Guard

Psalm 12:7-8 – You, LORD, will keep the needy safe and will protect us forever from the wicked, who freely strut about when what is vile is honored by the human race.

A civilian guard was first posted at the Tomb of the Unknowns on November 17, 1925, to prevent, among other things, families from picnicking on the flat marble slab with views of the city. A military guard was first posted on March 25, 1926. The first 24-hour guard was posted on midnight, July 2, 1937. The Tomb of the Unknowns has been guarded continuously, 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, since that time. Inclement weather, terrorist attacks, et cetera, do not cause the watch to cease.  There is always a guard on duty, watching, waiting, guarding.

So it is also with God. Come heat of summer or cold of winter. Come enemy threats or violent attacks. Come what may.  God stands guard. God will keep us safe.  God will protect us forever as a hen shelters her chicks. He will shelter and shield us on our way to our heavenly home.

Lord keep us safe today. Protect us and our families from the attacks of the enemy against our body and soul.  Protect us from tragedy and violence.  Protect us sickness.  Protect us from harm.  Protect us especially against attacks on our soul.  Our evil Foe the devil wants to lead us to despair or pride, so that because of arrogance or doubt we would turn from you in unbelief.  Preserve us from this dear Father in heaven.  Keep us safe today. Stand guard all day and all night. Amen.
