Saturday’s Prayer: Who are we?
James 1:16-18 - Don’t be deceived, my dear brothers and sisters. Every good and perfect gift is from above, coming down from the Father of the heavenly lights, who does not change like shifting shadows. He chose to give us birth through the word of truth, that we might be a kind of firstfruits of all he created.
Lord Jesus, it is so easy to forget who I am as I go about the business of living my life in this world. It’s easy to chase what is in my best interests. It’s easy to get discouraged when things don’t work out as I’d prefer. It’s even easy to begin to complain about what you have given and sent into my life. But God, this words from your servant, James, help me to see myself as I truly I am. I am one who has been generously gifted by my unchanging Father in heaven. He has poured out grace in so many different ways. Even the troubles of my life are gifts from him to draw me closer to him. I am one who has been reborn by the Spirit through the Word. As such I am not who I used to be. This changes every facet of my life. Help me, O God, as one who has been reborn to control my anger and temper. Help me, O God, to hear what you say in your Word and then to do it. Help to serve and help those who really need my help, especially those on the fringes of society and life. O God, you’ve given me birth for this purpose that I might serve the people in my life. Help me to practice this more and more, dear Father in heaven.
