Wednesday’s Prayer: The Source and Root
Out of the same mouth come praise and cursing. My brothers and sisters, this should not be. Can both fresh water and salt water flow from the same spring? My brothers and sisters, can a fig tree bear olives, or a grapevine bear figs? Neither can a salt spring produce fresh water.James3:10-12NIV
Dear Savior, I find two forces at work in me, constantly at war inside of me. There is the “Christian me.” He wants to praise you and speak what is good for my neighbor. There is the old “sin me.” He wants to curse you and my neighbor. These two natures in me are constantly at war. It shouldn’t be this way. The way this world works shows me that. A fresh water spring only gives up fresh water. But, out of me, who is both sinner and saint, comes both praise and cursing. Dear Jesus, who will save me from this body that is subject to death and that is producing such duplicitous things from the same mouth? Who will save me? Lord, who but you can save me from my duplicity and hypocrisy? Who but you can save me from my inability to bring my tongue under my control? Who but you can forgive and then help me to praise more and curse less? Who but you can make me brand new without a single curse on my tongue? Lord Jesus, save me from this body of death. Amen.
