Tuesday: On God’s Side
Now when Joshua was near Jericho, he looked up and saw a man standing in front of him with a drawn sword in his hand. Joshua went up to him and asked, “Are you for us or for our enemies?” “Neither,” he replied, “but as commander of the army of the Lord I have now come.” Then Joshua fell facedown to the ground in reverence, and asked him, “What message does my Lord have for his servant?”Joshua5:13-14
Lord God, I keep asking you this question: Are you on my side? Are you fighting for me? And of course, I know the answer to this question. You are on my side. You are for me and not against you. You proved it to me when you sent your Son to die for me on the cross. You are truly and clearly on my side and not against me. But here I learn another answer to this same question. You have not come to be on my side, but rather you have come that I might be on your side. You have come to lead the way, to go ahead of me into battle. You have not come to go behind me into battle, but to go ahead of me into battle. Lord God, lead the way. I’m with you, right behind you, riding into today’s mission on your wake, following close behind you. You are my captain, my commander-in-chief. Lead me, Lord, I follow. Amen.
