Friday’s Prayer: Pray first; act second
The Israelites sampled their provisions but did not inquire of the Lord. Then Joshua made a treaty of peace with them to let them live, and the leaders of the assembly ratified it by oath. Joshua9:14-15NIV
Lord God, this was such a simple mistake that Joshua made. The Gibeonites came with the clear intent and plan to deceive Israel. All the evidence seemed to show that the Gibeonites were telling the truth. Joshua could tell by sampling the provisions. This was such a simple mistake that could have been avoided if Joshua had just prayed first and acted second. God, you had spoken to Joshua again and again; you would have certainly spoken to them here if only Joshua had asked. I see my failure in this too. I wonder how many decisions I’ve made without praying about it first. I wonder how many things I’ve done without praying about it first. Prayer is for me sometimes a second thought and maybe even an after thought. Lord God, forgive me for not calling on you first in the day of my trouble. Forgive me for not committing my way to you first and trusting you to give wisdom and to guide me by your Spirit. Forgive me and teach me to pray first and act second. Make prayer my default action whenever I’m making a decision, whenever I’m about to do something. Make prayer my default action whenever I’m thinking, doing, or planning. Teach me to have prayer on my every breath so that I am praying without ceasing and am praying first and acting second. Amen.
