Saturday’s Prayer: Prayer is Powerful
There has never been a day like it before or since, a day when the Lord listened to a human being. Surely the Lord was fighting for Israel! Joshua 10:14
Lord God, this is such a visible example of how powerful prayer is. Joshua asked, yes, he practically commanded that you would stop the sun in the sky so that he could finish defeating his enemies. And what is most astounding about it is that you actually did it. At his request you stopped the sun in the sky until Joshua finished defeating his enemies. Father, as I hear this account, I ask myself, “Why don’t I pray more?” I ask this especially when I consider that this account shows me that prayer matters, that it leads you to act, that it makes a difference. Why don’t I pray more? God, my answer is not what I want it to be. I don’t pray, at least in part, because deep down I’m not sure what kind of difference it will make. At times it almost feels pointless to pray. But I know and believe that it’s not. You show me that here. Lord God, forgive me and teach me to pray with boldness, with openness, with confidence. Lord God, you invite me into your most sacred space to talk to you about anything AND you promise me that it makes a difference, that it changes things, that sometimes it even changes the things that you’re going to do in this world. Prayer is absolutely powerful. It is a precious gift from you. Teach me to use it. Amen.
