Wednesday’s Prayer: Listen. Today.
So, as the Holy Spirit says: “Today, if you hear his voice, do not harden your hearts as you did in the rebellion, during the time of testing in the wilderness, where your ancestors tested and tried me, though for forty years they saw what I did. That is why I was angry with that generation; I said, ‘Their hearts are always going astray, and they have not known my ways.’ So I declared on oath in my anger, ‘They shall never enter my rest.’Hebrews3:7-11
Lord God, help me to take to heart these strong words from the writer. He strongly rebukes the Jewish Christians of the first century because it looked like they were leaning to the same stubbornness and hard-heartedness as their forefathers. Keep me from the same! Keep me from going astray. Keep me from rebelling against you. Instead, Lord, when I hear your words in the Bible, help me to read it, learn it, meditate it, digest it deeply in my heart, take it to heart, and then live by it. Help me, dear Spirit, to hear your voice in the Scriptures and to drink deeply of those waters and to find my direction, my spiritual sustenance, and even my salvation therein. When you speak, you do not speak lightly. You want me to hear and respond in faith to it. Help me do this, O Spirit, and keep me faithful to you all the days of my life. Amen.
