Monday’s Prayer:Hold the promise.
Therefore, since the promise of entering his rest still stands, let us be careful that none of you be found to have fallen short of it. For we also have had the good news proclaimed to us, just as they did; but the message they heard was of no value to them, because they did not share the faith of those who obeyed. Now we who have believed enter that rest…Hebrews4:1-3
Lord Jesus, your promise of rest still stands for me. You have promised it to me again and again. But already now, as this week begins, as this days begins, I feel the pressure to perform. I feel the pressure of tasks bearing down on my shoulder. Already now, I feel the tension in my life of living for you or living for people’s praise. I feel all your commands bearing down on me, “Do this. Don’t do that. Here’s how you should live.” Already today all of this pressure is bearing down on me. But, Lord Jesus, your promise of rest still stands. You sit in heaven and you rule and direct the affairs of this world perfectly, the way you always have. More than that, dear Jesus, you have already kept all the commands of God perfectly in my place. In you, O Jesus, I have already done all that God demanded. Dear Holy Spirit, help me to hold on to this promise of rest! I can rest my heart because you rule all things. I can rest my conscience because Jesus has forgiven my sins and has given me his obedience. My soul can be still as I hold on to this promise of rest by faith. Holy Spirit, give this to me today even as I labor and strive in this world. Amen.
