Day 46 - John 8:21-30
Points to Ponder:
1.There are two similar phrases that Jesus says twice in this section:
a.I am going away (v 21); when I am lifted up (v 28)
b.You will die in your sins (v21, 24).
2.Which one did the Jews focus on?
3.What is the connection between these two things that Jesus is saying to them?
4.Why is it vital for us to see, understand and focus on both?
“The one who sent me is with me; he has not left me alone, for I always do what pleases him.” Even as he spoke, many believed in him. John 8:29-30
Lord Jesus, I want to do what pleases you. I want to do what pleases our Father in in heaven. I really do. But I find myself constantly struggling against sin and temptation. The thoughts that flit through my mind that I don’t want to be there. Yet, I feel helpless against them. There are even words that fly out of my mouth and actions that flow from my fingertips that leave me feeling powerless to stop sinning. I do things or say things and then wonder, “Why in the world would I do such a thing!?!” My sins are killing me and will kill me. Lord Jesus, save me from my sins and rescue me from death. I cannot – as much as I desire it – stop the sin that rises up in me. Save me and by the power of my baptism drown my sinful nature, kill it to death, and then do it again. Raise me up by your Holy Spirit to a new life that honors and glorifies you. Help me to do what pleases you today and to live my life for your glory. Amen.
