Day 47 - John 8:31-41
Points to Ponder:
1.Why did the Jews have trouble grasping the idea of slavery and freedom? What definitions were they working with?
2.What made it difficult to understand how sin makes us slaves?
3.How does sin enslave you? How does the law (10 Commandments) also enslave you?
4.How does Jesus set you free?
To the Jews who had believed in him, Jesus said, “If you hold to my teaching you are really my disciples. Then you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free.”
Lord Jesus, I don’t even know how pressure I carry on a regular basis until I step back to think about it. The pressure that I feel is more like an nagging ache than it is like a broken leg. In the back of my mind, I am always thinking about all the things that you and others expect me to do. There is always a to-do list from you that is a mile long of ways that I am to love you and other people. And then, when I add to this, the nagging guilt from sins committed and the constant attempts to make up for it. The pressure quietly nags at my soul and weighs me down. From time to time it just wears me out. This is when I get burned out, grumpy and crabby because in the back of my mind I’m feeling all this pressure. It enslaves me! Lord Jesus, help me to see how perfectly and completely you kept the law in my place. You did all that God expected you to do without fail and without sin. You never dropped the ball, ever. And I get credit for that. Lord Jesus, help me to see that there are no more expectations laid on me. I am free from the expectations of the law. And help me see, Lord Jesus, more and more how fully and completely you took the punishment for my sin. There is no curse hanging over my head. I am free from the punishment of the law. Help me to live in this freedom and remain here all my days. Amen.
