Day 82 - John 14:15-21
Points to Ponder:
1.List promises that Jesus makes to his disciples in this section.
2.Which one comforts you the most? Why that one?
And I will ask the Father, and he will give you another Counselor to be with you forever. He is the Spirit of truth…I will not leave you as orphans; I will come to you. John 14:16-17a, 18
Lord Jesus, I can’t begin to think what comfort these words held for your disciples. I don’t think they really knew what those words meant in that moment. Their minds were clouded and their hearts were overwhelmed by the things you were saying to them. But as they reflected on these words after your death, after your resurrection, after the coming of your Holy Spirit, these words must have brought them great comfort. After three years of intense community with you, daily walking and talking with you, you were about to depart from them first to death and then to the Father. But you promised to leave them NOT alone. What comfort these words must have been for them. They comfort me deeply too. You promise that you will NOT leave me alone. You do and continue to give me the Counselor, the one who comes to my side. He is my instructor and the one who shines my light on my heart from your Word. He is my wisdom-giver. He is the one who comes down through Word and Sacrament to fill me with your strength, power, courage and grit. He is and will be with me forever. I will never be alone. And Jesus! As if that were not enough, you promise that you too will not leave me as an orphan. I will not be left standing alone; you too are coming to me. Jesus, these words hold great comfort to me. Strengthen, comfort, and give courage to my aching heart as I walk and live in this world, pursuing heaven as my chief desire. Amen.
