Day 106 - John 19:1-16
Points to Ponder:
1. What do you learn about Pilate in this exchange with the Jews here?
2. What do you learn about Jesus in what he says to Pilate about Pilate’s role/power in the crucifixion?
3. How did Jews view Jesus? How did this conflict and/or match with who Jesus really was?
4. What do you continue to see in Jesus as he gets closer to the cross?
The reason the Father loves me is that I lay down my life – only to take it up again. No one takes it from me, but I lay it down of my own accord. I have authority to lay it down and authority to take it up again. This command I received from my Father. John 10:17-18
Lord Jesus, you continue to amaze me with your control of the situation and authority over those who were condemning you. You were never helpless. Things were never outside of your control. You had Pilate in the position you wanted him with the power you wanted him to have. You gave the Jews the authority and influence you wanted them to have. And they wielded it wickedly for their own ends. Yet, you still exercised your authority over them and achieved our salvation. Dear Jesus, you have given me authority in my own life. You have entrusted people and things to me and to my care. Help me to use them, manage them, and steward them wisely, for good, for your kingdom and for your glory. Keep me from seeking after my own ends and my own goals. Rather, set my heart to use what you’ve given me for you and your ends. Thank you for setting your heart on me and exercising your authority for me and my salvation. Amen.
