Day 107 - John 19:17-24
Points to Ponder:
1.What details of Jesus’ crucifixion does John share?
2.Why do you think he chose those details and not others?
3.What do you learn from the details he did choose?
Pilate also had a sign made and put on the cross. It said: Jesus of Nazareth, the King of the Jews. John 19:19
Lord Jesus, Pilate put this sign above your head as a statement of who you were and why you were crucified. He put this above your head as a jab at the Jews who hated you because this is who you claimed to be and who you truly were. Yet, this is more true than Pilate even imagined. You are the King of kings and Lord of lords. That’s who you are. You rule over all things. Even now, all things lie under your feet. Even now, you sit at God’s right and direct the affairs of this world for my good and salvation of people in this world. And yet, here at the cross I see that you set all that aside. You set aside your throne. You set aside your power. You set aside your glory for my salvation. Dearest Jesus, what love you have for me and for all the world. Though all power and glory is yours, you gave it up – even giving up your life – to save me. What sort of king are you! That you die for your subjects! Thousand, thousand thanks to thee, dearest King on Calvary. Amen.
