The Lord's Prayer

Best. Prayer. Ever. - #7 - Lord, rescue us!

If there was one word to describe your life, what would that word be?  If there was one word that you would choose, which one would you choose?  The one word Jesus would give us as God’s people in this world world is “warfare” and “struggle.”  We are at war and Jesus urges us to pray for help and rescue in this war.  As we wrap up the “best prayer ever” series, we learn to pray, “Lord, rescue us.”  Yet, even while we pray it, we have complete confidence that he will, in fact, rescue us. Who we have in Jesus is not a life-coach or an encourager, we have a rescuer.

Best. Prayer. Ever. - #6 - Forgive us our Sins

We live in a relationship with God and daily need his mercy and forgiveness from him.  We live in relationships with other people from whom we also need mercy and forgiveness.  We live in relationships with other people who sins against us; we daily need to give forgiveness and mercy.  This is a prayer about those relationships and about the forgiveness we desperately need to receive and share.  We’re looking at the Lord’s Prayer and today we’re studying the fifth petition: Forgive us our sins as we forgive those who sin against us. Best. Prayer. Ever. - #5 - Give us Today

We’re now in week five of a series on the Lord’s Prayer. In this series we’re drilling down and digging deep into each petition and prayer of the Lord’s Prayer. We’re studying in the Lord’s Prayer how we ought to pray. The disciples of Jesus saw Jesus praying and they wanted to learn how to pray. And so Jesus taught them. We’re learning how to pray from Jesus himself, and today we're learning to pray: Give us today our daily bread. It's not just a prayer for food, but a prayer for a heart of worship, a spirit of contentment, and an attitude of generosity.

Best. Prayer. Ever. - #4 - Thine not Mine

We’re now in week four of a series on the Lord’s Prayer. We’re learning how to pray from Jesus himself, but we haven’t yet asked the question: Why do we pray? Why do we take time out of our busy schedules to talk to God?  That's the question we answer as we dive into this petition: Your will be done.

Best. Prayer. Ever. - #2 - An open door to heaven.

The Lord’s Prayer.  It is a prayer known and spoken billions of times by billions of people in millions of places.  It is one of Jesus’ best gifts and one of our greatest temptations.  It is a prayer that we can pray at any time and it’s just on our lips.  It’s a prayer that people pray when they don’t know what else to pray.  It’s a prayer that people still remember and can pray even when dementia and Alzheimer’s sets in.  At the very same time, it is a prayer that we can pray without even having to think about the words coming out of our mouth and past our lips.  It’s a prayer that we can pray where our mind doesn’t catch up until we say “Amen.”  It is, as one author has said one of the greatest martyrs in Christian history.  For if wandering thoughts were knives, it would get stabbed a thousand times over in every Christian church around the planet.

But what if it was more than 60 some words of spiritual autopilot?  What if we could learn to pray the Lord’s Prayer with meaning and passion? That’s what we hope to accomplish with you as we study the Lord’s Prayer with you over the next number of weeks.  We’re going to – one petition at a time (except for one combination) – do with you.  We’re going to unpack the Lord’s Prayer with you and fill it with all the meaning that Jesus intended.

Today we’re tackling the first petition: Hallowed be your name. Listen as Pastor Bublitz teaches us on the basis of Revelation 4.

Today, we take a look at the Address to the Lord’s Prayer and ask the question: Whom are we addressing?
